Been Avoiding the Dentist in Years? Here’s What to Expect!

September 25, 2020

Many people choose to avoid the dentist due to fear, anxiousness, and the possible cost. However, since doing so is not enough to keep a person’s overall oral health in check, they still need to seek professional assistance. Without the emergency dentist near you, it is possible that their current oral care practices are ineffective or that they are at risk of a particular dental complication without knowing.

At Willow Wood Dental, we highly encourage patients to consider scheduling a dental appointment for us to diagnose, treat, or prevent possible oral issues. Patients may feel hesitant in doing so, but by knowing what to expect during their visit, they are more likely to feel more confident to give it a go. If this is a patient’s first time or if it has been a while since their last dental appointment, here are the possible things to expect:

Initial Step

During the visit, the dentist will take this time to get to know the patient, their mouth, as well as the goals for their oral health. Fret not since the dentist won’t be rushing this process to avoid causing stress. Expect that this step may take at least an hour.

For return patients, the front desk will confirm and update their data on file. On the other hand, new patients will be introduced to the new patient forms. Some of the necessary information required is dental insurance (if applicable), medical history, list of medications, contact details, and emergency contact information.

Dental x-rays

The patient will then be asked to undergo an x-ray for the dentist to properly check if they have cavities, jaw bone issues, and other dental complications. There is no need to worry since this process is quick and painless.

Comprehensive examination

During this step, the dentist will take a look at the patient’s teeth, gums, and jaw, as well as discuss the findings from their x-ray. To avoid serious problems in the future, they will review the patient’s bite, risk of gum disease/cavities, and the earliest signs of oral cancer. The dentist may use dental devices, but there is nothing to fear for this is only to monitor the condition of the gums and teeth. Afterward, the dentist will be explaining their findings and even provide a demonstration on how to perform proper oral care.

Recommendations and treatment plan

Since the dentist has now grasped the condition of the patient, they would then provide the best course of action moving forward. They would explain why this particular type of cleaning is ideal, as well as follow up treatments necessary based on their findings.

Dentists aim to make patients understand the things that take place during their appointment and also to make them feel more comfortable, so feel free to ask questions, express concerns, and discuss options.
